According to data from Arkham, a crypto intelligence platform, the United States government is among the largest holders of cryptocurrency, along with the United Kingdom and Germany. Arkham has introduced a dashboard that showcases the governments with the highest crypto holdings.
In the announcement made on April 12, Arkham stated that the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany are among the largest countries in terms of crypto holdings.
Through the new tracking tool provided by Arkham, individuals can monitor real-time balances and transaction histories of cryptocurrencies held by governments.
Based on the data, the U.S. government is the largest holder of Bitcoin (BTC) among the global states tracked by Arkham. At the time of writing, the U.S. government holds a staggering 212,847 BTC, which is valued at around $15 billion according to current prices.
In addition to BTC, the U.S. government also holds approximately $200 million in other cryptocurrencies such as Ether (ETH), as well as major stablecoins like USDC and Tether (USDT).
The U.K. government, ranked second, currently holds 61,245 BTC, equivalent to around $4.5 billion, according to Arkham’s data. The German government owns 49,858 BTC, which is roughly $3.5 billion at the time of writing.
In contrast, the government of El Salvador, the first country to make Bitcoin legal tender in September 2021, holds significantly less BTC compared to other countries tracked by Arkham. According to the data, the Salvadoran government holds 5,717 BTC, which is worth $405 million.
The release of Arkham’s dashboard showcasing the top governments by Bitcoin holdings is a significant step towards transparency regarding cryptocurrency assets owned by major players like country states.
Furthermore, it has been known for some time that the United States government holds substantial BTC holdings.
The dashboard also reveals that the U.S. government has continued to accumulate Bitcoin over the past few years. Based on Arkham’s data and previous reports, the U.S. government has added a minimum of 5,000 BTC since early 2023.
A noteworthy portion of the U.S. government’s Bitcoin holdings can be attributed to confiscations related to the darkweb market Silk Road, the hacker Jimmy Zhong, and the hackers of the crypto exchange Bitfinex.
