OpenAI acquires French and Spanish news collaborators to enhance AI chatbot training

OpenAI’s expansion in the media and entertainment industry continues with new collaborations with French newspaper Le Monde and Spanish media company Prisa Media. These partnerships aim to provide real-time, authoritative news content in French and Spanish to users of OpenAI’s chatbot and contribute to model training.

In addition to Le Monde and Prisa Media, OpenAI has also formed partnerships with Spanish-language media El País, Cinco Días, As, and El Huffpost. The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, expressed OpenAI’s commitment to supporting journalism and utilizing new AI technologies to enhance opportunities for content creators. As a result, users will soon be able to interact with up-to-date news content from these publishers through summaries with attribution and enhanced links to the original articles.

Le Monde, France’s leading newspaper with millions of daily readers, and Prisa Media, which reaches audiences across Spain, Latin America, and the United States, are excited about the partnership. Carlos Nuñez, the Chairman and CEO of Prisa Media, sees it as an opportunity to engage with audiences in new ways.

These partnerships follow OpenAI’s previous collaboration with German media giant Axel Springer in December 2023. The goal of these collaborations is to train OpenAI’s large language models (LLMs) using content from these media houses, resulting in better, more up-to-date content for users and increased transparency through attribution and linking of full articles.

OpenAI is also in talks with major media companies in the U.S., including CNN, Fox, and Time, to secure news content licensing. The company has partnered with the American Journalism Project and the Associated Press to support local news initiatives and contribute to LLM training.

While these partnerships are significant for OpenAI, media companies themselves are grappling with the challenges posed by AI. They are working to combat fake news, deepfakes, and protect their copyrighted materials. The New York Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in December 2023, alleging unauthorized use of millions of NYT articles to train chatbots. The lawsuit is ongoing, with both parties attempting to dismiss each other’s claims.

Magazine: Google is addressing issues with its Gemini AI to improve diversity, while ChatGPT’s behavior has become erratic, leading to concerns.
