How Web3 can aid in weather forecasting for developing regions

WeatherXM, a network of weather stations powered by blockchain technology, is on a mission to bridge the gap in weather accuracy between high-income and low-income nations. The network provides hyper-local meteorological data, which is essential for enhancing safety, promoting economic stability, and enabling effective planning.

Have you ever left the house without checking the weather first? While it may seem like a mundane part of our daily lives, weather forecasting plays a crucial role in society. It helps to enhance public safety, support economic stability, and enable effective planning for individuals and organizations.

Reliable access to meteorological observation data is vital for civilization to thrive. It not only reduces the risk of disasters but also aids in agricultural planning and management. However, a surprisingly large portion of the world does not have access to reliable weather forecasting data. Experts argue that there is a significant disparity in forecast accuracy between high-income and low-income nations, with the former benefiting from more accurate forecasts. This uneven distribution of the global weather infrastructure has significant implications for managing the adverse effects of climate change in less affluent regions.

WeatherXM, a community-powered weather network, is using blockchain technology to democratize access to reliable weather forecasting data. The network, founded by a team of engineers and weather scientists, combines the Internet of Things (IoT) technology with Web3 to create a new way of mapping the world’s weather.

Unlike slow and expensive national weather agencies that need to cover their investment costs, the WeatherXM Network operates as a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN). This decentralized model allows low-cost weather stations to be purchased, installed, and maintained by anyone. The community of weather station owners, who build and maintain the network, covers the costs and is rewarded with WXM, the native token of the WeatherXM Network, for providing data.

The weather data produced by the network is publicly available through web explorers and mobile apps for Android and iOS. This decentralization addresses the lack of hyper-local weather data globally. The current model of large, expensive weather stations installed miles apart by governmental weather agencies makes it challenging to achieve accurate and immediate weather predictions and assessments at the local scale. However, with WeatherXM’s decentralized model, hyper-local weather forecasting becomes accessible due to the distributed nature of its DePIN.

In addition to establishing a decentralized weather network, WeatherXM has launched a campaign on the crypto donation platform Giveth. The campaign aims to go beyond providing weather stations and establish a decentralized network in the areas that need it the most. All donations collected from the campaign will be used to donate ten weather stations to EthicHub farmers.

“We have deployed over 4,700 stations in 81 countries in record time, but the areas that need them the most have been slower to adopt. We are about to change this,” said Manos Nikiforakis, WeatherXM CEO. “Every station we install in an underserved area is a win for both the local economies and meteorologists around the world who can benefit from valuable new data for their models.”

WeatherXM is building a decentralized global network of weather stations. The project, following the establishment of the WeatherXM Network Association in November 2023, is now preparing to launch the WXM token with long-term plans of becoming a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO).

The Web3-powered weather data network offers a wide range of benefits, including enhanced public safety through more reliable weather predictions, support for economic stability for industries heavily reliant on weather conditions, and facilitating more effective planning for individuals and organizations.
