Leo Kahn, the CEO of Undeads Metaverse, recently shared his journey in creating a AAA survival Web3 game in a recent AMA with Cointelegraph. Kahn’s story highlights innovation, community-driven development, and the seamless integration of traditional and blockchain gaming technologies.
Kahn stressed the complexity and commitment required to produce a game of AAA quality within the Web3 ecosystem. He mentioned that achieving such a level of quality involves collaborations with renowned studios like Warner Brothers for sound design.
When discussing his inspirations, Kahn gave credit to Capcom’s Resident Evil series, which is a foundational pillar in the survival horror genre. He stated, “Since I was a kid, I’ve been playing that game, and they are still going strong. But it’s really about how you take it to the next level. For example, in our game, you can play as zombies and you can play as humans as well.”
Undeads Metaverse is designed to be accessible to both Web2 and Web3 users. Kahn explained, “Why even do Web2? Because some platforms do not support Web3 tech, whether it’s your iOS or Android. So, we basically built it for everyone.”
“We spent about $9 million as of January 2024 in just developing this game,” revealed Kahn. He added, “We also did our mint launch, which generated a little over a million dollars in the dead of crypto winter, where nobody was doing anything. We became the top third tradeable asset on OpenSea.”
Kahn outlined the extensive game lineup of Undeads Metaverse, including titles like Undeads Rush, Undeads Viral (both currently available), and Undeads Lottery (launching in Q1 2024), which embody the Web3 gaming ethos.
Discussing the studio’s flagship game, Undeads.com, Kahn said, “Everyone wants their hand on this one, they are like ‘How can we play this game, get our hands on it?’ Finally, after more than two years of development, this game is coming out in Q2 2024.” He also mentioned that Undeads.com will be VR-focused from day one for both Web2 and Web3 users.
Kahn explained the difference between traditional Web2 models and Undeads Metaverse’s play-to-earn model. He highlighted that in traditional games like Roblox, players spend time playing but don’t receive anything in return. However, with the play-to-earn model in Undeads Metaverse, players get paid to play. They can be builders in the game, create various items, and earn and sell them within Undeads.com. With the UDS token, players can swap it for anything they like, essentially making it real money.
Community engagement is essential to the development philosophy of Undeads Metaverse. Kahn mentioned the active involvement of nearly 60,000 members across Discord and Telegram in shaping the game’s direction. He also announced the launch of the UDS token in Q2 2024, emphasizing its utility over speculative trading.
Kahn critiqued the current state of Web3 games, stating that there are about 1,500 to 1,600 games today, but many of them are not enjoyable. Undeads Metaverse aims to deliver a AAA-rated game that genuinely entertains and engages players.
Kahn’s vision extends beyond gaming to the potential of the metaverse. He cited significant investments by industry giants like Mark Zuckerberg as evidence of the metaverse’s future impact. The project’s roadmap includes the integration of VR technology.
