Ubisoft, the well-known AAA game studio, is one step closer to releasing its first blockchain-based game. During Paris Blockchain Week, the studio unveiled the first gameplay trailer for Champion Tactics Grimoria. As part of an exclusive playthrough, the lead developers showcased the tactical PVP RPG to Cointelegraph.
In Champion Tactics Grimoria, players have the ability to create blockchain-based figurines with unique features and characteristics. These figurines can then be combined into a team of three for the turn-based game. The graphics and animations in the game are of the highest quality, typical of a Ubisoft title. Players will need to strategically choose which heroes to combine in order to counter their opponents effectively.
Nicolas Pouard, the Vice President of Ubisoft Strategic Innovation Lab, revealed that the studio took a different approach to building a blockchain-based game. Instead of focusing solely on the assets and nonfungible tokens, Ubisoft created a universe around them. The game revolves around champion figurines with different skills and abilities. Similar to DOTA, certain champions work well with specific classes and specs and can counter the opponents’ choices in turn-based matches.
During the Paris event, Ubisoft and Oasys, the gaming blockchain protocol used for the game, provided attendees with a firsthand look at the gameplay. They also announced a new whitelist that allows prospective players to start crafting figurines for their champions roster.
Pouard emphasized that Ubisoft’s goal is not solely financial gain but rather to prove that they can create a high-quality Web3 game that gives players true ownership of digital assets. He stated that understanding the market and the launch strategy for this type of game is crucial. Ubisoft aims to empower players by allowing them to populate the game with figurines and experience the concept of owning gaming assets.
In addition to these announcements, Oasys revealed its integration with the omni-chain interoperability protocol LayerZero. This integration is part of the 2024 Dragon Update, which focuses on enhancing interoperability across Oasys’ gaming ecosystem.
In a related magazine article, a player named Ava expressed dissatisfaction with Web3 gaming, while also mentioning that 2 million Bitcoin Miner players only made 13 cents.
