In the most recent episode of
“Decentralize with Cointelegraph,”
host Savannah Fortis and WeatherXM CEO Manolis Nikiforakis explore the future of weather forecasting, discussing how Web3 and the Internet of Things (IoT) can revolutionize weather data collection and provide precise hyperlocal weather insights.
Revolutionizing the Collection of Weather Data
Picture a world where individuals ranging from farmers to scientists have access to the most accurate and localized weather data. The
community-driven weather network
WeatherXM is striving to make this vision a reality by establishing a decentralized network of weather stations powered by Web3 and IoT technologies.
These
decentralized weather networks
allow users to share data from their own weather stations, creating a comprehensive and trustworthy source of weather information. According to Nikiforakis:
This approach involves the community and enhances the precision of weather forecasts while making vital weather data accessible to all.
Cutting-Edge Technology and Practical Implementations
WeatherXM’s technology combines IoT devices with blockchain networks like Helium and Filecoin to store its data securely. This integration enables the storage and sharing of extensive weather data while upholding security and scalability.
Owners of weather stations receive the platform’s native ERC-20 governance token, WeatherXM (WXM), as a reward and incentive mechanism. As of May 30, WXM became tradeable on Uniswap v3 and other platforms. Users can also receive Arbitrum-based daily rewards and accumulate beta rewards for their active participation.
Nikiforakis elaborates on the real-world applications of the technology, such as providing accurate weather forecasts for agriculture and enhancing disaster preparedness.
By establishing a decentralized network of weather stations, WeatherXM aims to ensure that even the most remote regions can benefit from precise weather information.
Nikiforakis also emphasizes the importance of WeatherXM’s efforts in developing regions, where access to accurate weather data can significantly impact agriculture, safety, and overall quality of life.
WeatherXM is also working on initiatives to provide weather station hardware to underserved communities, ensuring that everyone can partake in the network.
Looking Ahead
WeatherXM has successfully deployed 5,000 weather stations, with the majority actively contributing to the network. On May 22, WeatherXM secured $7.7 million in a Series A funding round led by Lightspeed Faction.
As the project progresses, the focus remains on expanding the network and enhancing data collection to ultimately establish a global decentralized weather system.
