Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com have joined forces to introduce and commercialize a cutting-edge “.blockchain” domain name system (DNS)-enabled Web3 domain.
As revealed to Cointelegraph, the dynamic duo collaborated to officially register the .blockchain Web3 domain with ICANN, the globally recognized authority on IP addresses and domain names.
ICANN is set to introduce new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) by the second quarter of 2026. This gives Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com a year to get ready for the application process for the innovative domain.
In recent times, Blockchain.com has successfully onboarded 40 million verified users, established over 90 million crypto wallets, and facilitated a staggering $1.2 trillion in crypto transactions.
In a conversation with Cointelegraph, Sandy Carter, the chief operating officer of Unstoppable Domains, expressed her enthusiasm about how the partnership could drive further adoption of Web3. She stated:
Lane Kasselman, president of Blockchain.com, echoed Carter’s sentiments, emphasizing:
Upon receiving approval from ICANN, individuals worldwide will have the opportunity to register .blockchain domains for the Web2 ecosystem. Unstoppable Domains intends to expand its domain registration services to provide tailored domain names for individuals, brands, and businesses.
Additionally, on April 4, the ApeCoin community decisively approved a proposal to register “.APE” as a new top-level domain (TLD) with ICANN.
An overwhelming majority (91.68%) of the ApeCoin community members voted in favor of the proposal, while 8.32% opposed it. The proposal outlines that D3 will spearhead the initiative to prepare and submit the application, a process expected to span about a year.
Fred Hsu, co-founder and CEO of D3, shared with Cointelegraph that the DNS domains offered by the company, including those to be registered with ICANN, are versatile and can be utilized for Web1 (email/web), Web2 (apps/social), and Web3 purposes.
