A Web3 developer recently shared a cautionary tale of losing funds due to accidentally exposing his wallet keys on the popular developer platform GitHub.
Brian Guan, one of the co-founders of the Web3 streaming app Unlonely, took to X on June 5 to reveal that he had lost $40,000 after mistakenly making a repository on GitHub public, forgetting that his secret keys were included in the repository.
When asked by a community member how long it took for the funds to be siphoned, Guan disclosed that it only took two minutes for someone to withdraw the funds.
Despite attempts to reach out to Guan for further comments, Cointelegraph has not yet received a response from him.
Following the exposure of Guan’s mishap, the crypto community had mixed reactions. Some members expressed sympathy for the developer and offered support, while others brought up Guan’s past comments about using OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, to write code.
In a previous post in 2023, Guan had criticized projects that paid smart contract engineers $200,000, labeling them as “ngmi,” or “not gonna make it.” He suggested that developers should be capable of writing solidity with the assistance of ChatGPT.
In response to this, a community member named Foobar humorously parodied Guan’s views by implying that anyone paying $200 for a hardware wallet is also “not gonna make it” and that developers should be able to store private keys on GitHub with ChatGPT’s help.
While some expressed regret over Guan’s situation, others felt that his opinions on developers reflected a sense of “Gen Z entitlement.”
On a different note, a memecoin called Turbo, coded using ChatGPT by digital artist Rhett Mankind in April 2023, saw a surge in prices, reaching a new all-time high on May 28 with a market capitalization exceeding $600 million.
As the crypto space continues to evolve, the use of ChatGPT for coding remains a subject of debate, especially after the success of Turbo in the market. In the midst of these developments, crypto enthusiasts are already making waves in the 2024 election with their disruptive voting strategies.
