Ethereum developers have unveiled EIP-7732, a new Ethereum Improvement Proposal designed to revolutionize block validation processes and enhance blockchain efficiency.
The proposal introduces substantial revisions to block validation, aiming to bolster both security and performance by bifurcating the process into consensus and execution phases.
This initiative addresses escalating demands for efficiency within the Ethereum ecosystem, echoing co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s advocacy for accelerated transaction confirmations.

Key Technical Aspects of the Proposal
At the heart of EIP-7732 lies the Enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation (EPBS), a mechanism that segregates block creation into two distinct roles: the consensus proposer and the execution proposer.
The consensus proposer selects the execution proposer, who commits to generating a valid block containing critical data, such as payment information or block hashes.
To oversee timely block submission, a panel of validators, termed the Payload Timeliness Committee (PTC), ensures that the execution proposer fulfills their commitment.
Significance of EIP-7732
EIP-7732 aims to alleviate the computational burden on validators by decoupling the consensus and execution layers. This separation is anticipated to heighten network efficiency and speed.
Under the current Ethereum setup, validators must swiftly execute both consensus and execution roles, potentially leading to inefficiencies and procedural delays.
EPBS empowers validators to focus exclusively on immediate consensus validation, deferring execution validation to a later stage without compromising network integrity or operational pace.
Furthermore, the proposal advocates for a trustless interaction between builders and proposers, guaranteeing payment and the inclusion of valid blocks while eliminating the need for intermediary services.
Vitalik’s Drive for Enhanced Ethereum Performance
As Buterin underscored in a recent post, “Fast transaction confirmation times are a pivotal aspect of an optimal blockchain user experience.”
Thanks to enhancements like EIP-1559’s transaction fee restructuring and stable post-Merge block times, Ethereum now achieves transaction confirmations within a remarkable 5-20 seconds.
However, applications with stringent speed requirements demand even faster throughput, presenting a stark contrast to the existing 12-second Gasper consensus mechanism.
With ongoing deliberations on EIP-7732 and its proposed reforms, the prospect of accelerated transaction speeds looms tantalizingly close. Yet, achieving this may necessitate another hard fork entailing backward-incompatible modifications.
