EigenLayer Xs account breached distributing harmful airdrop link

EigenLayer’s X account has fallen victim to a security breach, where a fake airdrop campaign was displayed. In a post on October 18, EigenLayer’s X account promoted a new airdrop campaign targeted at users who were eligible for the previous one. However, instead of directing users to the expected restaking protocol, the airdrop claim led them to a malicious link. The post was swiftly deleted, indicating that the attackers may have lost access to the account.

ZachXBT, an investigator known for their work on the blockchain, issued a warning about the malicious airdrop link on October 18. Given EigenLayer’s significant popularity, it is possible that many users had already visited the malicious link. EigenLayer is currently the second-largest protocol on Ethereum, with a total value locked (TVL) of over $11.1 billion, as reported by DefiLlama.

Despite the initial post being removed, the compromised account continued to share malicious links. Another airdrop campaign was posted, this time with a link that closely resembled EigenLayer’s official blog. However, the malicious link redirected users to a different domain, “blog.eigenfoundation.org,” instead of EigenLayer’s actual blog address, “blog.eigenlayer.xyz.”

This recent compromise of EigenLayer’s X account is separate from a previous incident involving unauthorized selling activity. On October 4, the EigenLayer team announced an investigation into the sale of approximately 1.6 million EIGEN tokens, worth around $5.7 million, from a wallet ending in “f10D.” The team later confirmed that the incident was caused by a hack, where a malicious attacker compromised an email thread related to an investor’s token transfer into custody. However, EigenLayer assured the community that this incident was isolated and did not impact the overall ecosystem. They stated that there were no known vulnerabilities in the protocol or token contracts.

EigenLayer’s growing popularity has made it a target for scammers, with multiple attacks occurring in a short period of time. These incidents highlight the importance of maintaining strong security measures and staying vigilant against potential threats.
