Core DAO contributor believes that building utility on Bitcoin is an expansion of Satoshi’s vision: BRC-20

As we step into the year 2024, Cointelegraph’s podcast, Hashing It Out, is delving into the narratives that are expected to dominate the cryptocurrency conversation. In episode 45, Rich Rines, an early contributor to Core DAO, a layer-1 blockchain network that supports Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible decentralized applications on top of Bitcoin’s governance, sheds light on the potential rise of BRC-20 tokens and the movement to develop utility and financial applications on the Bitcoin network (BTCFi).

Rines explains why BRC-20 tokens have a place in the Bitcoin ecosystem, despite ongoing ideological debates and technical criticisms. He also highlights the potential of BRC-20 and BTCFi to establish a sustainable economic environment on Bitcoin, drawing lessons from the implementation of decentralized finance (DeFi) on Ethereum and other layer-1 networks.

During the podcast, Hashing It Out host Elisha Owusu Akyaw asks Rines whether Bitcoin was considered boring before the advent of BRC-20. Rines responds by stating that Ordinals and BRC-20 have introduced innovation and excitement into the Bitcoin ecosystem, which was previously lacking. While acknowledging that Bitcoin’s role as digital gold may be somewhat monotonous, Rines emphasizes that it serves an essential real-world purpose that cannot be overlooked. In his view, Bitcoin was not boring before BRC-20, but BRC-20 has injected a new level of excitement into the ecosystem.

Addressing the ideological debate surrounding the integration of utility into Bitcoin, Rines argues that Satoshi Nakamoto’s original vision was to create a superior form of money with Bitcoin (BTC). However, Bitcoin faces scalability challenges that layer-2 networks could potentially resolve, enabling the creation of alternative financial systems while preserving the security of the Bitcoin base layer and the billions of dollars invested in it.

Rines recognizes the value of existing layer-1 networks like Ethereum and Solana, along with the DeFi ecosystems built on them. However, he believes that the landscape may shift as user needs evolve, potentially leading users to gravitate towards layer-2 networks built on Bitcoin.

To gain a deeper understanding of these topics, listen to the full episode of Hashing It Out on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or TuneIn. And be sure to explore Cointelegraph’s full lineup of other shows.
