A wave of phishing emails with crypto themes has raised concerns among crypto users on social media. These emails, appearing to come from content creator platform Patreon, have resulted in users’ email addresses being signed up for Patreon by scammers. The scammers then use these accounts to send malicious emails from fake crypto projects on the platform. Reports of these phishing attempts first surfaced on January 23, with users receiving fake airdrop offers from impersonators of popular crypto projects like Chainlink, Solana, Manta Network, and Sui. Patreon Support responded to the concerns on January 25, assuring the crypto community that the issue had been identified and resolved. They explained that the problem was related to email verification and a false claim from a crypto account pretending to be a Patreon creator. However, some users on social media continue to report receiving scam emails even after the supposed fix. It is worth noting that in 2023, over 324,000 cryptocurrency users fell victim to phishing scams, resulting in total losses of $295 million, according to blockchain security platform Scam Sniffer.
