Vitalik Buterin, one of the co-founders of Ethereum, has proposed a unique solution to Elon Musk’s Windows operating system (OS) issues. He suggests that Musk should consider using the open-source OS Linux instead. Buterin extended an invitation to Musk to join the desktop Linux community, following Musk’s complaint about the inability to install Microsoft’s Windows OS on his new computer without a Microsoft account.
Linux, similar to Windows, iOS, and macOS, is an OS, but it sets itself apart from others by being open-source. It was first launched in September 1991 and has gained a dedicated user base over the years. The Linux OS powers the popular mobile OS Android.
Open-source software allows programmers to access, modify, and enhance the source code of a computer program. This enables them to add new features and fix any issues with the software.
Buterin’s suggestion aligns with his strong support for open-source software, which did not come as a surprise to many. Users on X, a platform, praised Buterin for his advocacy of open-source software. However, some users cautioned that Linux might not be the ideal option for Musk, considering his main focus on using the PC for gaming.
On February 26, Musk shared on X that he encountered difficulties using his laptop PC with Windows OS without a Microsoft account. He mentioned that there used to be an option to skip signing in or creating a Microsoft account. Users on the platform countered Musk’s statement, stating that it is still possible to use Windows OS without a Microsoft account. This led to a community note being added to Musk’s tweet. Nevertheless, Musk disputed this, claiming that the option is no longer available. Another note in response explained that the option still exists but is more complicated than in Windows 10 and requires some workarounds that may not be widely known to average users.
Users on X also provided Musk with instructions on navigating through the complex workaround process in the comments. However, Musk believes that the process should not be this intricate.
