SingularityNET founder Ben Goertzel believes that an early prototype framework for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) could be up and running as early as next year. Speaking at the Beneficial AGI Summit, Goertzel outlined a blueprint for the development of AGI that ensures it benefits humanity and is not controlled by corporations or governments. AGI refers to an AI system that can perform any intellectual task that humans can do. Goertzel’s plan involves using open source code, decentralized infrastructure and governance, diverse AGI algorithms, and ethically sourced and managed data. He also emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, allowing people from all around the world to contribute to AGI development. Goertzel’s own project, OpenCog Hyperon, is expected to make a breakthrough in AGI. The project will release an alpha version in April, which will serve as a proto-AGI using a programming language called Metta. Goertzel predicts that by early 2025, a baby AGI could be developed. He supports Vitalik Buterin’s defensive acceleration approach to AGI development, which aims to accelerate progress while avoiding concentration of power and addressing potential risks. Goertzel’s new book, “The Consciousness Explosion,” explores the benefits and risks of AGI. He acknowledges the risks associated with AGI development, such as geopolitical competition and unethical use, but believes that the benefits outweigh them. However, he remains cautious about the unknown territory of AGI development and the potential for unforeseen outcomes.
