Prosecutors in Nigeria are set to proceed with a case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive who has been in detention since February.
A spokesperson for the family informed Cointelegraph that Gambaryan’s legal team conducted a cross-examination of an EFCC witness on July 2. The EFCC has pressed money laundering charges against Gambaryan and another Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who managed to escape custody in March and reportedly fled to Kenya.
The trial for Gambaryan is scheduled to resume on July 5, although his family has expressed concerns about his deteriorating health during the 128 days of his detention alongside Anjarwalla. Gambaryan has suffered from double pneumonia and malaria and has complained of pains in his foot and back.
In response to the situation, Yuki Gambaryan, Tigran’s wife, mentioned that she has not been in communication with Nigerian authorities but has been in touch with officials from the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Abuja. She also stated that she regularly speaks with Binance employees and the legal team representing her husband in the EFCC case.
Yuki expressed her disappointment at the initial response from the U.S. Government, mentioning that they have since shown increased efforts to assist. She believes that any disagreements between Binance and Nigerian authorities should not involve Tigran.
Initially, Nigerian authorities charged Gambaryan and Anjarwalla with tax evasion and money laundering when they visited the country as representatives of Binance in February. Anjarwalla managed to escape to Kenya in March and is facing possible extradition back to Nigeria. The tax evasion charges were dropped by Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service in June, but the money laundering case remains ongoing.
Several U.S. officials and concerned individuals have criticized Nigerian authorities for holding the two executives accountable for the alleged actions of the company. U.S. Representatives French Hill and Chrissy Houlahan visited Gambaryan in Kuje Prison in Nigeria, urging authorities to drop the charges and release him on humanitarian grounds.
Yuki Gambaryan has initiated a petition to bring her husband back to the U.S., which was close to reaching its goal of 5,000 signatures at the time of publication. The petition results will be forwarded to the U.S. State Department, President Joe Biden, the EFCC, and the Nigerian government.
